The beauty market is getting more sustainable and “greener” than ever. Brands are not only facing high consumer demands, but often also increased energy prices. This means that it is no longer just the origin of individual ingredients that is important, but also the formulation process itself. Approx. 90% of the costs of producing a formula are attributed to the heating and cooling process, costs which are omitted for cold processed formulas. Generally, the term “cold-processed” means the product was processed without the usage of high heat levels. As these formulations also don’t have to cool down, they are energy and time saving. Moreover, the lower energy requirement reduces CO2 emissions and the carbon footprint in total.
But there is another benefit to mention. Heating up ingredients can break down or denature vitamins, fats in oils and nutrients with negative effect on their activity. All these factors make cold-processed formulations everybody’s darling – from brands to consumers. Although it is not always possible to avoid heating, there is a wide range of formulations that can be prepared cold.
